On a rainy afternoon in Mumbai, I caught up with Kajal Jain, founder and creative head of Ahilya Jewels. Rain, coffee and a stimulating discussion about silver jewellery. I must say it, was an afternoon well spent.
Prernaa Makhariaa (PM): Significance of the name ‘Ahilya’, and how did your journey for Ahilya begin?
Kajal Jain (KJ): Ahilya means perfect in Sanskrit. In one line she would describe her collection as soaked in tradition with a contemporary twist. Ahilya offers a wide range of sterling silver jewellery.
Despite marrying a diamantaire, Kajal decided to make her mark in silver because of her love for silver jewellery. Furthermore she wasn’t getting the variety and designs that catered to her taste. Therefore she decided to venture into making beautiful jewellery pieces herself.
PM: What are the Product categories
KJ: In all there are 11 product categories. Besides the usual like Earrings, Rings, Necklaces, Bangles & Bracelets, we will be adding a range of Baju bands, Anklets, Maang tikka too.
PM: Types of collection
KJ: There are many collections under Ahilya. One of them being a range inspired from the architecture and design elements of Southern India.
There’s a painting collection which has painting in the centre.
Next up is the Coin collection which is based on the coins of olden days.
There’s a glass collection, and a mother of pearls collection as well.
I found the Filigree jewellery collection from Cuttack very impressive. It draws inspiration from Spanish, south Mediterranean and central European design styles.
Kajal’s product range has been a beautiful confluence of art from different parts of the world.
Ahilya Jewels has products ranging from Trishul kada to unisex bracelets and also Ganesha rings for men. According to Kajal, there are the standard chains and bracelets as well.
It was a pleasant surprise to know the high number of footfalls and interest shown by men in silver jewellery for themselves.
The e-Commerce push
Kajal feels that for a larger audience base, digital media is a must have. It ensures wide reach and has enabled her to connect with target customers across India and globally.
The philosophy behind the brand name ‘Ahilya’ – bringing out the beauty of being a woman.
The brand name personifies a woman who is very sure of herself, super confident, well-travelled and a fusion of Indian ethos and modernity.
Quality is paramount to Kajal. They provide the highest purity of silver. As stated by Kajal, Ahilya is the only brand that hallmarks every piece and gives authenticity certification.
Presence on Velvetcase is part of Kajal’s plan to have an online presence. She feels it is a very good marketplace, great visuals and Velvetcase caters to the same target audience as Ahilya. Kajal is very happy to partner with Velvetcase.
When we think jewellery, we instantly think of Diamond, Gold and Jadau; however people like Kajal are bringing out the lost charm of silver jewellery in the most creative manner. So people, there is another viable addition to your jewellery and accessories casket. Silver is back and how!
With Navratri around the corner, oxidised silver jewellery from Ahilya Jewels makes the perfect accessory to blend with my outfits. Be it denims with a kurta, a chaniya-choli, skirt with a top, salwar kameez or a saree – Ahilya offers jewelry for almost every age group that would compliment your ensemble.
